2015 Elderly Mentoring Program
Tuesday, 05/05/2015Bantul, DIY

The Village Assistance Program from SurveyMETER continued in 2015. This year, it focused on assisting the elderly in Watugedug Hamlet, Guwosari Village. It was a self-initiative and independent program held by SurveyMETER under full support of the Knowledge Sector Initiative (KSI). In 2013-2014 this assistance program concentrated on issues of village administration systems, basic public services of ECED, the preparation of village profiles, and the elderly group empowerment in Guwosari Village and Jatimulyo Village.
Assistance activities for the elderly in Watugedug Hamlet were focused on mentoring the capacity of companion cadres. They commenced with training in elderly gymnastics for the elderly companion cadres of Watugedug Hamlet on April 5, 2015. It was expected that after participating in the training they could lead the elderly to exercise. In this initial activity, the elderly were directly involved. They felt happy because apart from being able to gather with other elderly people, they also got the benefits directly because they felt better and fresher after participating in gymnastics. This elderly exercise program was scheduled once a month in conjunction with the implementation of the elderly posyandu.
The following activity was socialization and advocacy from SurveyMETER to the Guwosari Village government as well as providing additional material to the elderly companion cadres of Watugedug Hamlet on April 28, 2015. SurveyMETER invited Mr. Sudiman M.Pd.I of the Social Organization Melati Sleman to advocate for village staff and elderly companion cadres. SurveyMETER also provided assistance with 3 units of tensimeters to the elderly companion cadres of Watugedug Hamlet on the occasion.
Another program was "homecare" visits by companion cadres to bedridden elderly people or those who are no longer capable to perform daily activities independently. The cadre team was divided into 3 groups, each of which had dependent elderly assisted based on the area to visit. They conducted several activities during home care, such as providing food parcels, participating in cleaning their houses if necessary, performing blood pressure measurements, and last but not least, listening to their storytelling. The elderly seemed commonly feeling lonely so they need a friend to talk to or just listen to their stories. It commenced on May 3, 2015, and used to be routinely held every two weeks.
The village community most welcomed these empowerment programs.

End of Year Activities of Guwosari Village Mentoring
Wednesday, 08/01/2014Guwosari, Pajangan, Bantul

On December 26, 2013, at the Guwosari Village Hall complex, Pajangan District, Bantul, the year closing activities of the Village Assistance Team from SurveyMETER were filled with two activities a day. The first one was “ECED Learning and Environmental Management Training” attended by 12 ECED in Guwosari Village. The training material was delivered by an ECED expert, Dra. Kis Rahayu, principal of the Aisyiah Ngampilan Excellent ECED and a lecturer in ECED education subject at Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta. Although it was held for a full day from morning until late in the afternoon, all participants were enthusiastic since they received different training materials from the previous one.
It seemed to be a closing bonus from a series of 8 Training Of Trainers (TOT) on Nutrition Education for 3 ECED components, namely ECED educators, parents, and students throughout Guwosari Village, delivered by One Earth Integral Education Foundation.
The second activity was “Family Basic Data Collection Training for 2014 Guwosari Village Profile”. It was attended by each hamlet administrator throughout Guwosari Village and 30 youths from the Guwosari Village Youth Organization, took place from afternoon to evening, and was delivered by Edy Purwanto, M.Sc from SurveyMETER.
It aimed to follow up on the sub-program of assisting the preparation of online village profiles in the PRODESKEL program of the Ministry of Home Affairs already carried out by SurveyMETER in this village. Having completed the training activities, Guwosari Village, accompanied by SurveyMETER, would continue to independently prepare 2014 village profiles by involving 2 to 3 youths in each hamlet as field data collectors. For the effectiveness of the data collection process, officers would participate in community meetings in their hamlet by distributing basic family data forms.. Later they would conduct a short training to the community on how to fill out the questionnaires so they could fill them out independently by themselves.
The innovation in the preparation of PRODESKEL by involving the youth was also to identify a comparison of the effectiveness of the family data collection process involved Posyandu cadres in each hamlet in previous years. (JF)

CSO Assistance for SUM2 Program Partners
Wednesday, 13/03/2013SurveyMETER
The SUM2 (Scaling up the HIV Response Among Most-at-risk Populations) program is a kind of support and cooperation between the Governments of Indonesia and the United States in efforts to control HIV in Indonesia, which began in 2010 to 2015. This collaboration has actually been started in 1993 until 2010 through HAPP (HIV/AIDS Prevention Project, followed by ASA I Program (2000-2005), ASA II Program (2005-2010).
The SUM program aims to improve the overall management capacity for NGOs in Indonesia that focus on HIV/AIDS, with a long-term objective of improving access and quality of comprehensive service for communities vulnerable to and affected by HIV/AIDS in Indonesia. The support provided by SUM will focus on 3 things. First, to increase the technical capacity and organizational performance needed to carry out active, comprehensive, integrated, and sustainable interventions impacted on increasing service utilization and changing the behavior of high-risk groups in a significant and measurable manner. Second, to increase strategic information management capacity to respond to HIV/AIDS issues in high-risk groups. One form of assistance for this strategic information aspect is integrated biological and behavioral surveillance as well as monitoring and evaluation. Third, to provide and monitor financial support to civil society organizations/NGOs to encourage the expansion of effective, integrated, and sustainable interventions in high-risk groups in areas where large populations of MARPPs and high rates of HIV transmission exist.
To be able to have a significant impact, the SUM2 Program works in a number of cities in 8 provinces with the highest MARPs (Most-at-risk Populations), namely DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, North Sumatra, Riau Islands, Papua, and West Papua.

SurveyMETER Engagement
SurveyMETER was involved in the SUM2 program starting October 2012 for an initial period of 1 year, in its capacity for monitoring and evaluation of CSOs (Civil Society Organizations) working in HIV/AIDS control programs, as well as other providers (Penabulu, Satunama, and Circle, for organizational development and financial management). SurveyMETER provided assistance to 8 CSOs in DKI Jakarta and 7 CSOs in East Java. It was expected the involvement of SurveyMETER in the SUM program would encourage CSO sovereignty, especially in terms of monitoring and evaluation, specifically towards data production, data quality, data management, data analysis, as well as utilizing software for data entry programs..
SurveyMETER's role in the SUM2 program was more categorically to ensure a timely monthly CSOs reporting with good data quality; to build their capacities in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data for more effective implementation (cost and reporting) including the use of mobile-phone technology; to conduct periodic qualitative studies to them (by focus group discussions, for example) from key populations whose task was to identify barriers to service utilization; provide assistance in good data management for them including in reports; to assist and ensure the implementation of the 2013 Semi-Annual Survey carried out by CSOs.
The scope of activities carried out by SurveyMETER leads to developing a work plan for CSOs, especially monitoring and evaluation related to knowledge and skills; developing CSO capabilities, especially in monitoring and evaluation; developing tools for the implementation of monitoring and evaluation; developing web-based CSPro data; developing mobile phone technology for CSO outreach; assisting and developing the 2013 Semi-Annual Survey and Qualitative Studies for CSOs; and developing technical assistance to CSOs in conducting monitoring and evaluation. A concrete impression of SurveyMETER's efforts in this mentoring program was to assign 4 mentors: 2 in DKI Jakarta and 2 in East Java, namely Henry Setyo Nugroho, Oki Petrus Laoh, Rangga Fauzian Andika, and Angky Bayu Putrantyo, while the program coordinator is Dani Alfah MPA who is also the Coordinator of the Assistance and Development Section for the SurveyMETER Region.
