Dissemination of the Capacity Assessment Study for Elderly-Friendly Cities in Bali Province

Additionally, the purpose of dissemination of the results of the Capacity Assessment Study for Elderly-Friendly Cities is the Provincial Government of Bali. The Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, welcomed Dr. Ir. Ni Wayan Suriastini, M.Phil (Executive Director of SurveyMETER), and Bondan Sikoki, MA (SurveyMETER Supervisor) represent the Research Team, accompanied by Prof. Luh Ketut Suryani, a Balinese senior figure who is also the Director of the Suryani Institute, on Friday, July 5, 2013, in his office. Governor Mangku Pastika was escorted by some representatives from related government work units and stakeholders, in the Bali Province office environment.
In her presentation, Dr. Suriastini revealed one thing that prompted the study carry out is the anxiety of elderly numbers will exceed toddlers by 2030. To date, if toddlers are 9.7 percent while the elderly are 7.6 percent of the total population of Indonesia, then in 2030, it will be the opposite: The elderly is estimated to reach 14 percent and toddlers at 7.6 percent. It concluded that the existence of the elderly has not acquired appropriate maximum attention until now. She also asserted that it took a sample of 14 cities in Indonesia, including Denpasar City with 2,100 household respondents with assessment criteria based on the eight elderly-friendly city dimensions set by WHO.
"Regarding the results of this study, we want to inspire stakeholders and the wider community to start making efforts to create an elderly-friendly city or area," said Suriastini.
Responding to the results of this study, Governor Pastika conveyed that the existence of the elderly needs serious attention from stakeholders and the wider community until they enjoy the rest of their lives with higher quality, both physically and mentally. In addition to the increasing number, according to Pastika, many potential elderly people with various ideas and experiences will also exist. Hence, the Bali Provincial Government plans to design a roadmap to realize Bali as an elderly-friendly city. He expects the roadmap able to realize before 2030. (JF)
