Training of IFLS Data Usage at CEDS UNPAD Bandung

The Center for Economics and Development Studies (CEDS) of Padjadjaran University, Bandung, invited SurveyMETER to deliver training on Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) data utilization. CEDS, mostly known as LP3E, the Research, Community Service, and Economic Studies Laboratories, is an institution of study center under the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business, Padjadjaran University (UNPAD), Bandung.

Training of IFLS Data Usage with STATA was held for three days (February 13-15, 2015) at the MET Hall of the Post-Graduate Complex FEB UNPAD, on Jl. Cimandiri 6-8 Bandung. In addition to the teaching staff and master and doctoral students of UNPAD, there are also representatives of research and policy-making institutions, including TNP2K, BAPPENAS, and so on. Meanwhile, the presenters and training instructors from SurveyMETER were Firman Witoelar, Ph.D., Edy Purwanto, M.Sc, and Nur Suci Arnashati.

SurveyMETER's team applied the training materials with a combination of subject matter exposure, discussion, and hands-on learning practices. Prior to starting the material, the team conducted a pre-test for the participants in the morning and provided assignments (homework) in the evening.

On the first day, Dr. Firman presented IFLS material in general, a number of studies using IFLS data, and a questionnaire structure of the household survey and community and facility survey; then Dr. Edy explained the structure of data file naming, introduction to the roster, K-book, and variables of (hhid, pid, pidlink, ar01a, and ar01i), later Ms. Arna explained the IFLS datasets components with STATA Refresher as well as folder organization (do., log., temp., data) and other basic commands.

On the second day, Dr. Firman and Ms. Arna mentored the practice of using data with STATA (review STATA commands for merging files eg: merge, mmerge, combine, append), merging book (HH with HH, Individual with individual, HH with Individual), additional commands (reshape, encode, decode), reshape and merge books (continued), merge files with multi-occurrence, and recognize ptrack and htrack. On the last day, Dr. Firman guided the participants in combining HH data with CF and combining files among IFLS survey rounds.

All participants were very enthusiastic about participating in the training. They expressed contentment since they had previously tried using IFLS data but could not understand the structure of it properly, and even got confused when encountering the missing data. (JF)
