SurveyMETER in collaboration with Tilburg University and J-PAL SEA conducted the Indonesian grocery store business survey. The field survey data collection was conducted on March 18 and was predicted to accomplish in mid-April 2016.

Initially, this research on the retail stall business was called the Retail Shop Business Management Survey in Jakarta. Including at the data collection stage (listing) the sample population last January was still named like that. The stages of this study include the baseline study, program intervention, and endline study.

It aims to determine the factors that hinder the growth of retail stall businesses in Indonesia and to see how far the knowledge influence of good business practices was on the performance of small and micro-businesses. The research sample was 1,300 retail stalls in urban and sub-urban areas of DKI Jakarta Province. All are located in 30 urban villages in 4 administrative cities of DKI Jakarta except North Jakarta but including the district of Kepulauan Seribu.

In this study, respondents were asked many questions to find out the business practices they had been doing, among other things how do they record financial transactions, inventories, loans, savings, etc., as well as their business conditions (including sales, profits, investments)? Field researchers also asked about psychological factors from business owners, such as enthusiasm, beliefs, and other personal values.

This survey is a baseline study where the endline will be carried out within the next 6 months after the intervention process is implemented. In the endline study, the researcher will revisit the same sample and ask how the impact of the intervention has on the development of their business. (JF)
