From mid-February to March, SurveyMETER conducted a qualitative study of adolescent reproductive health in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). This qualitative study is also to collect data in the preparation of the quantitative study instrument which is planned to implement in April 2016.
According to the study coordinator, Setyo Pujiastuti, it went through a series of preparations including discussions on instrument preparation, data collection for the initial study, and a pilot study.
It was carried out by conducting Focused Group Discussions (FGD) and in-depth interviews among educational institution administrators (teachers), parents of students, high school students, policymakers, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Teacher FGDs have been conducted several times involving 28 teachers from dozens of senior high schools/equivalents in Sleman. FGDs of parents’ students were also conducted twice. Meanwhile, the student FGD was conducted 4 times. The FGD was respectively conducted by taking into account the representation of rural, urban, public, and private elements.
In-depth interviews were carried out with officials at the education office, health office, the family planning agency, and NGOs that observe adolescent reproductive health in five districts/cities in DIY. They were also conducted with the students who manage the Information and Counseling Center for Youth (PIKR) in two senior high schools in Sleman Regency.
The purpose of this study was to collect basic information about adolescent reproductive health by observing the knowledge, environment (education system, social environment, family background and values, peer groups, media), adolescent sexual behavior, the impact of adolescent sexual behavior, and impact of teenage pregnancy out of wedlock. It aims to provide input on policies related to school and out-of-school youth. (JF)
