Correlation of Personality with Online Learning Outcomes During a Pandemic

Personality affects a person in facing a problem, especially the Covid-19 pandemic situation. An atmosphere of lockdown, do not allow to go outside, every time you leave the house you are required to wear a mask, and socio-economic conditions that change drastically can affect a person's habits and personality. There are five basic dimensions of personality which are often referred to as the "Big 5" personality traits. According to Goldberg, the five broad personality traits described by this theory are extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism.
The Big Five Personality Model can capture the regularities and differences in personality between people. Extravert personalities tend to have wider social networks and are always able to provide assistance to others compared to introverts. Individuals who tend to be introverted, do not like to socialize, often harbor their own problems, are prone to suicidal thoughts, especially when facing serious problems. Conversely, someone who has an openness personality can positively influence the level of their welfare, because they have a curious attitude and are easily open to new experiences. Agreeableness makes people like to be partners in exchanging opinions because agreeableness tends to be more responsive to the needs of others. Self-control is one of the strengths of a person who has a conscientiousness personality. People with conscientiousness personalities are not only considered more trustworthy, but actually more reliable, because they are more likely to engage in acts of reciprocation. Meanwhile, neuroticism personalities tend to avoid in creating social networks.
The author conducted an online survey in May 2020 of Indonesian students with a sample of 210 students. If described according to the Big Five Personality Model, 29% of students have agreeableness, 9% conscientiousness, 3% extraversion, 8% neuroticism, and 52% oppennes. As many as 82% of students felt that their understanding was not better with online learning. There is no difference based on gender. However, the proportion of students aged 24 years and over said that their understanding was not better, which was 69%. For undergraduate students, 17% answered their understanding better with online learning, while Postgrad and Phd students had a better understanding with online learning, which was 40%. When described using the Big Five Personality Model, the ones who said that their understanding was not better with online learning were students who had neuroticism, which was 94%. Meanwhile, students who have other personalities (agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and oppennes) have no better understanding with online learning is below 90%.
To form individuals in having good social relationships, two-way social contact is required. However, what is happening now is that most of the social contacts are only one way. Lecturers give papers then students read and understand themselves, after which students are immediately given assignments. This makes students feel uncomfortable when doing online learning. They considered that the lecturers were not maximal in delivering the ongoing lecture material and some students also felt that they did not understand. The increasing frequency of assignments is also a factor in the symptoms of student discomfort. Another obstacle is internet access, students feel burdened by the cost of accessing the internet, plus when they do online lectures students feel they are not maximized in understanding lecture material so that the expenses they make are not commensurate.
There are 7 tips provided by Minister of Education, Mr. Nadiem Makarim and can be used to solve this problem. One of the tips that can be used for students with neuroticism personality is to divide study groups according to the same competencies. In the division of study groups, fellow students are expected to be able to work together, provide input, and evaluate each other's learning outcomes. In the future, in order to make online learning be better, lecturers are expected to be able to provide better explanations. Students must also follow the learning process correctly.
